ABSTRACT
Background: There are changes over the time in cardiovascular system, wich associated with acute conditions and comorbidity, produce deteriorating in the elder cardiovascular system and high risk of hospitalization, with detriment on functionality.
Aim: To identify cardiovascular diseases in elderly inpatient and its impact with mortality.
Material and Method: Analytical and cross-sectional study, including 60 years and older inpatients of Internal Medicine and Geriatrics services between October 2012 and march 2013. We measured aged, gender, main diagnoses, comorbidity and mortality.
Results: During the six-month study 205 patient of 60 years and over were hospitalized with an average of 74.79 (SD ± 8.20) years, 108 (52.68%) women, 165 (80.48%) had at least one cardiovascular comorbidity with hypertension in 139 (67.80%) of them. A cardiovascular disease was a direct cause of admission in 64 (31.22%) patients; the most common were: Worsening of Chronic Heart Failure, Acute Coronary Syndrome, Ischemic Stroke and Syncope. Hemorrhagic Stroke had the most elder people (mean 85.00; SD ± 4.24;
p ‹ 0.01) and more deaths (mortality 100%,
p ‹ 0.01); Acute Coronary Syndrome was the first with Dyslipidemia [14 (82.4%),
p ‹ 0.01] and Diabetes Mellitus [12 (70.6%),
p ‹ 0.05]. Mortality was related with Hemorrhagic Stroke (OR: 4.9; CI 95%: 3.73-6.44; p ‹ 0.05) and Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (OR: 4.63; CI 95%: 3.57-6.02;
p = 0.06).
Conclusion: Cardiovascular diseases are a frequent cause of hospitalization in the elderly, identifying Hemorrhagic Stroke and Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage related with mortality.
