ABSTRACT
Introduction: thyroid disorders are currently causes of morbidity and disability worldwide. Objective: to determine the risk factors for the onset of thyroid diseases in Ambato Social Security Hospital in Ecuador during 2015.
Method: a study of cases and controls was performed, taking as a target group and sample the patients treated in the Comprehensive Medicine Service suffering from these diseases, who were randomly included 1: 2 (100 cases/200 controls). The statistical analysis was based on a multivariate strategy, determining the odds ratio (OR), relative risk (RR), confidence intervals at 95% (IC 95%) and chic squared test with a level of statistical significance P ‹ 0.05, using the Epi Info 2000.
Results: obesity outnumbered the risk by six times (OR = 6.64); history of thyroid surgery (OR = 3.33); radiation (OR = 3.08); white race (OR = 3.06), and associated diseases outnumbered by three times (OR = 3.04); while family history of thyroid disease (OR = 2.85); genetic disease (OR = 2.02) and stress doubled it (OR = 1.83); age and sex were not risk factors, the most common disorders were: hypothyroidism, nodular goiter, malignant tumor, Hyperthyroidism, diffuse and multinodular goiter.
Conclusions: it is important to systematize on the prevention and early detection of risk factors for thyroid diseases, in order to reduce its incidence and prevalence practices.
