ABSTRACT
Introduction: retained teeth frequently appear in adolescents and young adults. Any tooth may be affected but in most cases, the lower and upper third molars and the upper cuspids.Case presentation: fourteen years-old male adolescent went to the maxillofacial surgery service because of lack of the left upper second molar that was proved in a physical-oral examination. The x-ray studies (overview and perinasal sinuses) showed the presence of retained second molar and non-erupted third molar in the left maxillary sinus. Surgical treatment was required to approach the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus through Caldwell-Luc technique and to visualize and to remove the two molars. The patient recovered satisfactorily.
Conclusions: it is indispensable to perform questioning, physical examination and radiographic studies to reach a diagnosis and to apply an effective surgical treatment in retained teeth.
