Yoga as an alternative for the treatment of persons with diabetes mellitus

ABSTRACT
Background: physical exercise brings a series of beneficial effects of great
importance for people with diabetes mellitus. Similar results may be also achieved
through the systematic yoga practice.
Objective: to determine whether yoga practice is an alternative for the treatment
of people with diabetes mellitus.
Development: it is recommended that diabetic people perform 150 minutes of
moderately intensive aerobics weekly plus endurance exercising twice a week. For
several reasons, many of these persons cannot practice conventional physical
activity and prefer practicing yoga that should be considered as alternative mindbody
safe, inexpensive, easy-to-learn therapeutic method that may be practiced by
the majority of people. According to the results of this review, a correctly
implemented yoga program can reduce the inflammatory effects and the oxidative
stress caused by various diseases, to improve insulin sensitivity, the glycemic
management and the lipid profile, in addition to lowering the body mass index;
hence yoga practice may lead to the decrease of metabolic and cardiovascular risk
factors. It is used in several areas of the world for the prevention of diabetes
mellitus and the treatment of diabetic patients.
Final thoughts: yoga practice is an alternative for the treatment of people with
diabetes mellitus.
