Management of neonatal ovarian cyst

ABSTRACT

Ovarian cysts are a common finding and the rate of detection has increased due to the advent of antenatal sonography. A conservative management has been suggested for uncomplicated cysts, although some of them carry the risk of subsequent complications, including ovarian torsion or hemorrhage, and there is the possibility of ovarian tumors. Currently, there is no standard treatment of fetal ovarian cysts and their management varies widely among different centers. We report the case of a newborn with a complex ovarian cyst found during prenatal ultrasonography; it was treated conservatively, with spontaneous resolution without complications. We review the literature and analyze which is the best therapeutic management for complex ovarian cysts.
