ABSTRACT
Background: Emergency services are centers of high medical complexity that have no restrictions on entry to users, so it has been suggested that many of those consultations do not correspond to problems with significant risk and, therefore, do not require the immediate attention provided in those services. The aim of our study is to establish and describe the major causes and pathologies why parents decided to go to the emergency room of the Hospital Español during the neonatal period of their children.
Material and methods: A descriptive, retrospective study was performed; our population included all newborns that came to the emergency room of the Hospital Español in the period from January 1
st, 2013 to December 31
st, 2015.
Results: The emergency department received 14,187 children, of which 271 were neonates. The main complaints were digestive disor ders (40%), infectious respiratory symptoms (30%) and neurological disorders (25%).
Conclusion: We can conclude, first, that the neonatal population is the minority of the population treated in the emergency department of the Hospital Español; second, that 60% of the neonatal cases handled were real emergencies.
