ABSTRACT
This study analyzes, from the patient’s perspective, the elements of therapeutic decision-making concerning the patient-physician relationship. The era of electronic information and patient empowerment, among others, have produced changes in the patient-physician relationship in women with breast cancer. In this context, such relationship has become complex and interactions while making treatment decisions are considered a conflict factor. However, decision-making remains an important factor from a patient’s perspective; therefore, understanding the conflicting factors may help the decision-making regarding breast cancer treatment. We propose to use objective measures to analyze elements of decision-making using a mathematical model. The analysis compares the patient-physician relationship from the latter’s perspective of two mathematical models and aid tools: the first, called “traditional”, and the second one, in relation to evidence-based medicine and its logic, features and multiple varieties. The variation of the second model called Markov chains is also mentioned. Finally, the authors propose a third model for women with early breast cancer with a proactive interest in participating in the therapeutic decision. It arises from game theory, which considers two players, a cooperative strategy, exchange of information, and a potential solution.
