ABSTRACT
Objective: to describe the results of the immediate sequential bilateral surgery of the
crystalline lens by using phacoemulsification technique and its economic advantages.
Methods: Longitudinal, descriptive and observational study of 20 patients with
bilateral cataract conducted at the Eye Microsurgery Service of "Ramon Pando Ferrer"
Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology from September 2013 to September 2015. The
evaluated variables were age, sex, crystalline lens hardness according to LOCS III
and the pre and postoperative results.
Results: Males predominated in the sample with 11 patients (55 %) and the average
age was 67.7 years for a range of 28-87 years. The study yielded significant results in
the staging of LOCS III in terms of nuclear opalescence and nuclear color 2 and 3 with
30.0 and 22.5 %, respectively. The refractive results showed significant improvement
and the use of this technique brought cost savings.
Conclusions: Immediate sequential bilateral surgery of the crystalline lens by using
phacoemulsification technique represents a valuable method that allows achieving
good refractive results almost immediately after surgery and the patient to return to
his/her normal life in a shorter term.
