ABSTRACT
Obesity in schoolchildren has become a severe
global health problem. Schoolchildren with
excessive body weight increase by the numbers
with each passing day. Excessive body weight,
and obesity as the most extreme form of this
problem, can be cause for group rejection,
insufficient school performance, and school
dropout. Obesity in schoolchildren also places
the child | adolescent at increased risk of insulin
resistance, and with it, Diabetes, blood
hypertension, and other facets of the Metabolic
Syndrome. There might be several reasons for
epidemic expansion of obesity in schoolchildren,
and they might overlap in their influence. The
family, as the core of the schoolchild’s life, is
determinant for the formation of healthy life,
food and physical activity styles. The school
should also promote among the students proper
ways of food and physical activity by teaching
sound choices concerning food selection, menus
conformation, and practice of physical exercise.
Obesogenic environments in which the
schoolchild might be involved should be
identified and corrected in order to prevent
deletereal influences upon his/her future health
status. The parents of the schoolchild should be
reeducated in healthy food and physical activity
practices for them in turn to be able to influence
upon the education of their children. Similarly,
health care teams should be educated and
trained, and endowed with the required
competences, in order to successfully deal with
obesity in schoolchildren, and hence, to protect
the genetic potential of the country. Lastly, a
legislation is required that incorporates the
principles of healthy food and allows the safe
and sustainable access of the schoolchild and
his/her parents to healthy and innocuous foods.
Coping with non-communicable chronic diseases
might only be posible through the articulation of common work and intervention interests and
strategies, in order to protect the health status of
the children and youths of the country.
