ABSTRACT
Introduction: Postoperative pain is one of the main problems encountered in the PACU with an average incidence of 60%. It is likely to contribute to inflammation acute postoperative pain. Dexamethasone administered perioperatively shown to have analgesic properties. Design: controlled clinical trial.
Material and methods: 30 patients undergoing abdominal surgery being divided into 2 groups randomly administered in a dose dexamethasone group at 0.2 mg/kg and the other placebo were studied. Measurements performed: postoperative pain by visual analog scale admission to postoperative care unit and at 24 hours.
Results: In group 1 postoperative pain in the PACU was 0 in 46.7%. In group 2 pain from 0 to 13.3%, with 0.013 p is present. At 24 hours in group 1 0 pain was present in 73.3%. In group 2, 53.3% had pain 0 with a p of 0.001.
Conclusions: The use of dexamethasone at 0.2 mg/kg in abdominal surgery decreases postoperative pain in the PACU and 24 hours after surgery, showing statistically significant difference.
