ABSTRACT
Introduction: cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is a rare vascular brain disease, characterized by thrombosis of the cerebral veins and larger breasts, causing cerebral edema, venous infarction and intracranial hypertension.Case history: a 21-year old, female, black, patient with a history of health and having 10 weeks of gestation, with 0 births and abortions attended to the Emergency Room of Abel Santamaria Cuadrado General Teaching Hospital, presenting nauseas , vomits, headache on the fronto-occipital region of moderate intensity, blurred vision and retro-ocular pain. The physical examination showed a bilateral ophthalmoplegia and in the lateral abducens muscle, facial paralysis and facial asymmetry; during the anamnesis it was known the birth control pills the patient was taking before pregnancy.
Conclusions: cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is rare but clinically important, mainly for complications. The diagnosis in recent years has progressed thanks to new neuro-imaging techniques and the high clinical suspicion. Early diagnosis and punctual use of anticoagulant therapy in this type of thrombosis is very essential to reduce morbidity and mortality rates.
