Competence for critical reading of clinical research articles in students of the Otorhinolaryngology residence in several institutions of health sector

ABSTRACT
Objetive: 1) To develop and validate an instrument to measure mastery of critical reading of clinical research articles. 2) To investigate the degree of mastery of the ability of critical reading. 3) To explore the effect of years of experience in the specialty, critical reading of clinical research articles in student residence in Otolaryngology.Material and Method: A cross-sectional and comparative study on medical residents from health sector of the four years. It was constructed and validated an instrument with summaries of published clinical articles, with 90 items to explore critical reading in three capacities: interpretation, judgment and proposals with a reliability index of 0.94.
Results: The global qualifications (medium) were low (maximum: 90), 67% of them (67 students out of a population of 100) did not exceed the level of qualification explainable by chance. In none hospital from health sector was found a significant effect of years of residence on the ability to critically read clinical articles.
Conclusions: The domain of critical reading of clinical research articles is low in Otolaryngology residents of various hospitals in the health sector, no difference was found in the comparison between years of experience in the residence.
