ABSTRACT
Introduction: Dengue is the arbovirosis having the largest global distribution and the risk of its spreading depends on the large quantity of vectors implicated in its transmission, the basic principles for the control of Aedes aegypti are based on the political willpower the governments can guarantee concerning the resources needed for the control actions involving the intersectorial coordination and community participation.Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention strategy carried out in Pinar del Rio municipality during the intensive fighting against Aedes Aegypti mosquito in 2016.
Method: a descriptive cross-sectional and observational study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the actions taken during the intensive fighting against Aedes aegypti in 2016, Pinar del Rio municipality. The target working group included four health areas. The research was conducted in two stages; the initial one comprised the behavior of the entomological indicators inside the municipality studied. The actions contained and designed into the strategy were implemented; thus in order to accomplish the final assessment the same entomological indicators were reviewed.
Results: the infestation levels were high, matching the house and Breteau index, the indicators of the program did not meet the established parameters with a very high rate houses locked and very low health requirements, when the actions of the intensive phase were implemented a positive modification was observed, achieving a decrease on the levels of vector infestation, the behavior of the main indicators of the program also reached a positive status , the starting point for the implementation of these integrated actions was accomplished by means of the intersectorial and community participation, strengthening the control actions and the community health requirements.
Conclusions: the intervention strategy applied in Pinar del Rio municipality during the intensive fighting against Aedes aegypti mosquito in 2016 was effective.
