Physiopathology of head trauma

ABSTRACT
Impaired cerebral autoregulation is frequent after head trauma. Cerebral autoregulation is defined as the maintenance of constant cerebral blood flow over a wide range of cerebral perfusion pressure. Changes in intracranial pressure after variations of mean arterial pressure can depend on the status of autoregulation. Intracranial hypertension due to traumatic head injury compromises the cerebral perfusion pressure and expose the patient to the risk of cerebral ischemia and it could have a severe repercussion on outcome. In this issue are reviewed the physiopathology of traumatic head injury.
