ABSTRACT
Background: Pneumonia is a generic term used to describe an inflammation of lung parenchyma that usually occurs in response to the uncontrolled proliferation of pathogenic organisms.Objetive: To evaluate the association between the inflammatory process (endothelial dysfunction) using the ankle-brachial index, with the presence of severity of community-acquired pneumonia, using the PSI scale in a hospital in Mexico City.
Material and Method: An observational, descriptive, crosssectional and prolective study was done, which took place at the Xoco General Hospital, Mexico City. The sample size was calculated for an alpha ‹0.05 significance, comparing the association between the presence of inflammation (endothelial dysfunction) in patients with community-acquired pneumonia, Group 1 (n=33), with non-severe pneumonia, and Group 2 (n=33), with severe pneumonia. Mean procalcitonin levels among patients who had severe pneumonia versus non-severe pneumonia were also compared.
Results: The statistical analysis in this study reported statistical significance with p‹0.0001 when observing the association between endothelial dysfunction and severity of pneumonia. Significant difference found in this study between the two groups. Smoking and alcoholism were found as factor risks.
Conclusions: There is association between endothelial dysfunction measured by the ankle brachial index and the severity of communityacquired pneumonia.
