ABSTRACT
Abdominal sepsis has an incidence similar to pneumonia and bacteremia in the intensive care unit and therefore outcome and cost are similar. Sepsis abdominal is a systemic response to a localized infectious process. Acute peritonitis has a high rate of mortality and is the first step of abdominal sepsis; survivors develop abscesses seven days later. The main manifestations of peritonitis are abdominal pain, fever, muscular resistance and abdominal silence. Ultrasonography, CT scan and nuclear medicine studies are useful tools to complete the diagnosis. Abdominal sepsis treatment includes the drainage of infectious foci, systemic support and use of specific antibiotics. Factors of adverse prognosis are: age › 65 years, number of surgery procedures (› 2), generalized peritonitis, malnutrition, septic shock and multiple organ failure.
