ABSTRACT
Introduction: The incidence of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) varies according the type of hospital of intensive care unit.
Objective: To know the epidemiology of AMI in a polyvalent intensive care unit (ICU).
Design: Retrospective and descriptive study.
Setting: Polyvalent UCI of a general hospital, Mexico City.
Patients: The files of sixty-six patients (55 men, 11 women, mean age 60.07 ± 11.09 yrs) with AMI were analyzed.
Interventions: None.
Measurements and main results: The main risk factors related with AMI were smoke 72.72%, systemic arterial hypertension 40.9%, dyslipidemias 28.78% and diabetes mellitus 25.75%. AMI was classified as anteroseptal (43.93%), inferior (39.39%), lateral (9.09%) and anterior 7.57%. The most frequent complications were premature ventricular contraction 27.27%, sinus bradycardia 18.18%, ventricular fibrillation 12.12% and third degree A-V block 12.12%.
Conclusion: We found a major incidence of AMI in our unit in comparison to other polyvalent ICUS.
