ABSTRACT
Introduction: End-stage cardiac failure is increasing each year and the posibilities of heart transplantation is limited in our country. The use of an implantable left ventricular device is a long-term therapeutic option for those patients.
Objective: To report the first cases treated with this procedure.
Design: Case report.
Setting: A surgery ICU of a general hospital of Mexico City.
Patients: Three male patients (31-53 yrs old) with end-stage cardiac failure.
Interventions: A left ventricular assist devices was implanted in abdomen.
Results: Two patients are still alive, both were extubated during the first 36 hours after procedure and they were discharged to home 21 days later. The more frequent complications were thoracic hemorrhage and difficulty for the epithelization of pneumatic outline wound. discharged to home 21 days after. The quality of life is better in the survivors and one patient is working as a teacher and gained 8 kg of weight in five months.
Conclusion: The lef ventricular assist device is an alternative option for the treatment of cardiac failure in patients waiting heart transplantation.
