ABSTRACT
Background: thyroid nodular disease is of frequent medical consultation, so it should be evaluated carefully in order to make the right treatment at the right time.
Objective: to determine the incidence of nodular thyroid disease and cytohistological correla-tion at the University Hospital "Manuel Ascunce Domenech" during the period from January 2013 to December 2014.
Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted. The universe was composed of 139 patients diagnosed with thyroid nodule treated at the aforementioned charitable institution during the period before indicated. The sample consisted of equal numbers of patients.
Results: the most common age group was that of 40-49 years. The disease was more frequent in females (87.8%). The multinodular lesions (70.5%) prevailed over the only nodular (29.5%). Most patients were classified as category II of Bethesda (52.5%). Paraffin biopsy identified benign lesions, multinodular goitre was the most reported (25.9%) and among malignant papillary carcinoma (16.5%).
Conclusions: there was relationship between classes I-IV with multinodular lesions and nodular lesions only with the V-VI classes. The analysis of the data showed that the fine needle biopsy is a highly sensitive for the detection of malignancy test. It also showed that this test has a high negative predictive value.
