ABSTRACT
The constant growth of
the geriatric population is
associated with an increase in
the necessity of surgery for this
population. The elderly patient
requires particular care because
of the common associated
comorbidities and the decreased
response to different stresses.
Because of this, there have
been a series of changes in the
management and approach of
the presurgical evaluation and
perioperative management.
Fragility in the elderly patient
has been gaining importance
as a fundamental element in
risk stratification and outcome
measures in surgery. Recent
studies have found a direct
association between fragility
and postsurgical complications,
increased hospital stay and
mortality. Give the previous,
incorporating the adequate
evaluation of the elderly makes
for a more adequate risk/
benefit analysis and can identify
witch factors or aspects of the
perioperative management can
improve in order to minimize
the surgical risk and optimize
the results of the surgical
interventions in the elderly.
