ABSTRACT
Introduction. Adequate arterial pressure ensures blood perfusion to vital organs. In healthy newborns at maternal cohabitation it is necessary to define this range according to the geographical area's altitude. Routine measurement of arterial pressure is not a common practice in neonatology and this may cause a low incidence of hypertension among newborns. The objective of this study was to describe arterial pressure levels in neonates staying with their mothers at a hospital in western Mexico. We used and oscilometer method to establish a normal parameter among our population.Material and Methods. This is a prospective-observational study. We obtained pre and postductal arterial pressure measurements along with demographic data from all neonates admitted to maternal cohabitation in a western Mexico hospital. The evaluation period started on March 1 and ended July 20, 2015.
Results. We collected data from 260 newborns, 127 females and 133 males. The epidemiologic profile included gestational age (GA) (=39+1.4 GA), weight (=3,132+464 grams), height (=49.2+1.9 cm), vaginal delivery 55.4% and cesarean 44.6%. The following arterial pressure levels were recorded: systolic (72-75%mm Hg SD 10.4-11.6), diastolic (44mmHg SD 8.5-9.3), mean arterial pressure (52.6- 54.6 mmHg SD 8.7 to 9.4).
Discussion. The sample included newborns considered healthy with arterial pressure. We evidenced the tendency in arterial pressure values. A larger sample is suggested to establish normal ranges and establish a percentile among the population in western Mexico.
