ABSTRACT
Introduction. Neonatal care characteristics and absence of prevention; detection and treatment programs for premature retinopathy cause it to be the main cause of infantile blindness in Mexico. The following work was done with the objective to know the distribution of treatment types used for retinopathy at the external neonatal intensive care unit in Hospital Civil de Guadalajara Fray Antonio Alcalde.Material and Methods. We used a case descriptive study of newborn retinopathy at the ENICU in Hospital Civil de Guadalajara Fray Antonio Alcalde. Analysis took place from January 2014 to March 2016. The following variables were obtained for analysis: gender, gestational age, weight and retinopathy stages. An excel data base was used for analysis.
Results. A total of 47 premature neonates with retinopathy were included. We obtained the following data: the mayor treatment incidence was among patients weighing 800 to 1000 grams and with a gestational age ranging from 28 to 30 weeks. This series showed no gender predominance and according to diagnosis, grade III was the most common in every zone. According to the treatment applied, the most frequent was laser photocoagulation (n=30) (64%), followed by antiangiogenic treatment (n=15) (32%) and lastly, vitrectomy (n=2)(4%).
Discussion. Our case series shows similar information to the one obtained in other studies of patients requiring treatment. It is well known that treatment with laser photocoagulation has a greater predictability in the disease control, since it has been with us for long time. Antiangiogenic treatment has shown good results, and our patients have experienced a favorable evolution up to this day.
