ABSTRACT
There is increased number of women over 40 years who are facing maternity,
hence the objective of this paper of analyzing the maternal and neonatal results in
primipara women aged over 40 years. A literature review was made in Pubmed to
find articles published in English or in Spanish about this topic in the last ten years.
As a result, 245 articles were selected from which 15 met the stated objective. The older mothers take more risks of facing hypotensive processes, diabetes and other
diseases than younger ones, in addition to more possibilities of cesarean section.
The newborns from older mothers have high incidence rates of low birthweight and
congenital defects. The women who make the decision of having a baby after 40 years
of age take increased risks of suffering diseases during their pregnancy, of facing
complications during delivery and difficulties in newborn´s health.
