ABSTRACT
The locked – in syndrome is a
severe and disabling neurologic
disorder that is due to a lesion
in the ventral half of the pons.
In this syndrome there is
paralysis of all motor activity
and anarthria as a result of
involvement of the corticospinal
and corticobulbar tracts in the
basis pontis. Portions of the
pontine tegmentum together
with the reticular formation
remain intact, so that the patient
is awake and aware. Vertical
gaze and blinking are spared
and are the only means by wich
such patients communicate.
