ABSTRACT
More than 95% of retropharyngeal abscesses present in children under six years of age. They occur as the result of the dissemination of nasopharyngeal infections, foreign bodies, trauma, and suppurative adenitis. In adults, retropharyngeal abscesses are related to a history of local trauma, such as surgical procedures or foreign bodies and in patients with a dental prosthesis. We present the case of an adult woman who had a fish bone impacted in the posterior pharyngeal wall. She developed a retropharyngeal abscess, which required surgical drainage, tracheotomy, intravenous antibiotic therapy, and daily surgical lavage. We review the literature and present the most important features of the clinical presentation, physical examination, laboratory and imaging findings, as well as surgical drainage options.
