ABSTRACT
Background: the critical-analytic thought is a necessary intellectual process in the university students for their professional development.Objective: to investigate on the necessities of students and professors to develop the critical-analytic thought in the first year of the Medicine career in the Biology area in Guayaquil University.
Methods: a descriptive study was carried out in the period from May to December 2015 in the Medicine faculty of Guayaquil University, in the first year, in the Biology area. Theoretical methods were used: induction-deduction, analysis-synthesis and among the empiric ones: the survey to professors and students and an interview was applied to key informants, and mathematical methods for information processing.
Results: deficiencies are found in the use of the critical-analytic thought in the students, it was verified that they consider possible to develop it in the classroom; the professors coincide in the necessity of using appropriate techniques and learning styles that strengthen and promote it, with the purpose of enriching knowledge in the different areas of the future health professional.
Conclusions: it was possible to characterize the development of the critical-analytic thought of the first year students in the Biology area, inaccuracies were found due to the insufficient application of intellectual operations, that´s why it is required to insert new didactic strategies with techniques that promote the critical-analytic thought in the teachinglearning process.
