ABSTRACT
Background. In Mexico there are no demographic data related to causes or indications that lead to a nephrectomy. In the United States and the rest of the world the principal cause of nephrectomies are the neoplasms. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of lesions in all nephrectomies performed at Medica Sur Hospital in Mexico City.
Material and methods. During the last 15 years (1999-2014), we obtained the files of 310 nephrectomies.
Results. Of the total, 216 were nephrectomies of tumors, which 194 were malignant (89.9%), 20 benigns (9.2%) and 2 metastatics (0.9%). Among malignant tumors, the clear cell carcinoma was the most common (80%). The rest of the tumors were special variants of renal carcinoma, urothelial carcinoma, sarcomas, Wilms tumor, and carcinoids. The second cause of nephrectomy was failure or renal exclusion secondary to complications of chronic conditions. The remaining nephrectomies were due to extra-renal surgical causes (4.2%), congenital lesions (3.2%), renal trauma (1.6%), complications of renal transplantation (0.9%), tuberculosis (0.3%) and autoimmune disease (0.3%).
Conclusions. The main cause of nephrectomy in Medical Sur Hospital was clear cell carcinoma.
