Effects of homeopathic treatment in Serve's disease

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Sever's disease is one of the common causes of heel pain in pediatric ages, related to physical activity, weight gain, and breech deformities.
Objective: to assess the effects of homeopathic treatment in Server's disease in children from 7 to 18 years old in Pinar del Rio municipality.
Materials and methods: a prospective longitudinal intervention study was conducted assessing the application of homeopathy, with a target group comprised of children diagnosed with Sever's disease (N = 100). The sample included 93 children referred to the Traditional and Natural Medicine service between January 2013 and January 2015. Two groups under treatment were randomly chosen, study (group I) and control (group II). In group I (n1 = 48) homeopathic medicines were applied, including rest and good-fitting shoes. Control (n2 = 45) rest was indicated, good-fitting shoes and NSAIDs if pain, or an indicated technique regarding its severity. Descriptive methods were used to summarize the variables.
Results: male gender predominated and ages from 7 to 12 years old. The most common triggering factors of the disease were: breech deformities, and the most frequent found in both groups was the calcaneous valgus. Children with high physical activity and overweight were most affected. In the study group there were no patients with poor outcomes; 91.7% had a good progress, 18.0% showed poor evolution in control group, six of these children were treated with cast immobilization.
Conclusions: homeopathy is a useful therapy for the treatment of Sever's disease.
