ABSTRACT
Endometriosis has a prevalence of about 10% and benefits from hormonal contraceptives treatment. It is a chronic and recurrent illness that occurs in fertile women, and is characterized by ectopic endometrial tissue. Clinical manifestations are: infertility, pain and pelvic mass. The goals of the treatment are: relief of symptom, prevention of progression of disease and the stimulation of fertility. Current therapeutic options include expectant management, pain, hormone therapy, surgery and combined therapies. The use of combined contraceptives is associated with reduced risk of developing endometriosis; they are a good choice for women with mild symptoms and to prevent pregnancy. Progestins are used for symptomatic endometriosis and as adjuvant to surgery. Because of this hormone therapy is considered first-line treatment.
