ABSTRACT
Background: According to the provisions of the International
Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT), there are about 287 antigens that
give rise to various groups. The knowledge of the presence of antigens
in erythrocytes is helpful in terms of ethnic breakdown, for handling
databases donors in blood banks, or to provide information on blood
incompatibility of patients with various alloantibodies. The Kell blood
group system is the most polymorphic third known so far, and one of
the most clinically relevant with respect to the development of immune
reactions. In Mexico there are limited data on the frequency of
Kell antigen studies.
Objetive: To determine the prevalence of Kell antigen in blood
samples obtained from volunteer donors attending the blood bank of
the Regional Hospital Presidente Juárez, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Material and Method: An observational, cross-sectional and
descriptive study in which participated volunteer donors who attended
the blood bank. Antigenic determination was made of ABO, Rh groups
and Kell antigen.
Results: RhD positive rate was 99%, blood type O was 77% and
2% with Kell antigen.
Conclusion: Prevalence of Kell antigen was only of 2%. The
knowledge about these characteristics of the population of volunteer
donors will allow better results in blood transfusion.
