ABSTRACT
The relationship between HIV / AIDS and malnutrition is an example of the vicious cycle of the immune dysfunction, infectious diseases and malnutrition. A study of cases and controls was carried out in Granma in the period of January 1st 1986 until December 31, 2014 with the aim to identify the nutritional condition as a risk factor associated with the onset of AIDS. The universe was represented by 861 people diagnosed with HIV. The case group was formed by 211 patients who were diagnosed with AIDS by CD4 T lymphocyte count less than 200 cells / mm3, by the appearance of opportunist diseases or both conditions. There were applied numbers and percentages and the univariate analytical methods, determining the association between variables; the multivariate analysis was also applied, using the Wald statistic. The risk factors that were associated with the onset of AIDS were the nutritional condition (p = 0.00) first, the coexisting infections (p = 0.00), and the immune-competence status (p = 0.00). It is concluded that the nutritional condition and the coexisting infections had a high significant association with the onset of AIDS compromising the lives of the diagnosed persons.REFERENCES
