ABSTRACT
Objective: To know the distribution of Human Papillomavirus HPV types and risk factors associated with the presence of cervical lesions in Cuban women.
Methods: Cross-sectional study in 519 women between 15 and 59 years with no previous positive cervical
cytology in 4 municipalities of Havana was performed. Human Papillomavirus(HPV) detection and genotyping
was done by Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Dot Blot hybridization.
Results: From the studied population, 41.6% was diagnosed with positive cytology, 58.8% of them with highgrade cervical lesions. In 66.3% HPV was detected, significantly associated with positive papanicolaou smear. A total of 30 viral genotypes were identified, predominantly HPV 16 (41.0%), HPV 31 (11.6%) and HPV 18
(10.2%). The independent predictors to develop HPV infections were: first sexual intercourse before 15 years
old, menarche between 10 and 14 years, cigarette smoking and oral contraceptives use. In women fewer than
20 high-grade cervical lesions were significantly predominant.
Conclusions: The study results support the use of Human Papillomavirus vaccine and suggest the investigations based on virology and cytology tests in women less than 25 years.
