ABSTRACT
Iatrogenic diseases form an important, though uncomfortable topic. The central nervous system is highly vulnerable to iatrogenic diseases as it cannot tolerate acute anatomic or metabolic changes, Its elevated toxin sensitivity turns it into an ideal target for iatrogenic diseases. It is estimated that adverse results occur in 3.7% of the hospitalized patients and that 5 to 10% of the hospital costs are generated by iatrogenic diseases. Two third of these events could be prevented. 562 articles published during the last 10 years in the following medical publications were analyzed: Annals of Internal Medicine, New England Journal of Medicine, Neurosurgery, Neurology, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Anesthesiology, and Current Opinion in Neurology. We also analyzed those publications found at the Medscape website from January, 1993 to August, 2003. A total of 40 articles were found related to iatrogenic diseases affecting the nervous system. We divided these articles according to the medical specialty for which the disease was reported. After that the causes were tabulated. Finally, the results were reported according to the kind of disease found and it’s frequency. Although not all the iatrogenic diseases that take place in hospitals are reported, a general overview of the iatrogenic diseases that have been presented in medical practices during the last 10 years is obtained.
