ABSTRACT
Objective: To characterize the maternal factors of risk related with the low birth weight in the University General hospital "Abel Santamaría" Cuadrado of Pinar del Río, in the understood period of January to June of the year 2010.
Method: An observational investigation of control and cases. Universe included all the gestantes (2681)
whose childbirth was carried out in the period of study in this institution. The sample was constituted by 360
gestantes divided in a group case (120) and another control (240) selected at random by sampling. The statisticians Z and x2 were used, as well as the test of
Odds Ratio for the comparison among the variables, being considered the significant values for p ‹ 0,05.
Results: A prevalence of the maternal age was evidenced understood between 20 and 34 years (63.6%). The
anemia the element that more statistical relationship had with the first floor weight when being born was,
conditioning an increment of the appearance risk 7.97 times superior in the women with this antecedent when
comparing it with the rest of the interviewed population. The arterial Hypertension associated to the gestation
was presented 15.8% in the group study and alone 2.9% in the group control, behaving with an OR 6.25.
Conclusions: Presently study was identified as maternal factors of risk associated to the the low birth weight when being born the ages smaller than 20 years and bigger than 35 years, the drop escolaridad, the malnutrition for excess, the antecedents of recently born under weight, the tabaquismo and the anemia.
