ABSTRACT
Objetive: To analyze the relationship of the factors associated with
treatment (acute and chronic effects, restrictions by taking medications,
and perceived benefits) and non-adherence to antiretroviral
treatment (ART).
Material and Method: A transversal, analytic and comparative
survey was conducted with 547 people with HIV who were receiving
care at two public institutions from Mexico City. A questionnaire
was used to measure adherence to ART, acute (eg. diarrhea, fatigue or
nausea) and chronic side effects (eg. lipodystrophy and hypercholesterolemia),
restrictions by taking medications, and perceived benefits.
Results: Fatigue, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea and nausea were the
most common acute side effects; lipodystrophy was the most frequent
chronic side effect; taking medicine with empty stomach was the main
constraint, and most people perceived benefits of ART. The main factors
for non-adherence to ART were chronic side effects and distrust.
Patients that reported a chronic effect (OR=2.23, p=0.001) had higher
probability of non-adherence to ART in the last month.
Conclusions: Patients with HIV whom reported chronic effects
are more likely to non-adherence. These findings might be taken into
account by health care workers to promote adherence to ART among
people with HIV.
