Post-traumatic carotid-cavernous fistulae. Case report

ABSTRACT
A case of traumatic carotid-cavernous fistula is presented. A 38 year old male suffered a skull base fracture after a car accident indicating persistent headache and left eye flushing, chart aggravated in a few days to get specific to the entity and bilateral, given by conjunctival injection, proptosis, chemosis, diplopia, paralysis of ocular motility and continuous tinnitus. A carotid-cavernous fistula was clinically diagnosed and confirmed by cerebral angiography. The patient had rapidly progressive evolution to vision loss and increase of orbital congestive symptoms. He was treated by endovascular occlusion with detachable platinum
coils, after which evolved satisfactorily.
