ABSTRACT

Urinary infections are a common disease in pediatrics, and according to its location it can be classified as high or low urinary infection. The symptomatology of each case varies in accordance with the patient’s age, where symptoms are more nonspecific at younger ages. The diagnosis of urinary tract infection should be considered by a suggestive clinical history and physical examination, plus a compatible urine test. It is confirmed by a positive urine culture, and the amount of colonies depends on the method by which the sample is taken. It is recommended that all children with a presumptive diagnosis of urinary tract infection start empirical treatment with antibiotics after the urine culture is performed. An early diagnosis and effective and timely treatment is very important in order to prevent future complications.
