ABSTRACT
Introduction: The clinical manifestations of patients with carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) are related to the management of venous drainage and blood flow through the fistula and include ocular and neurological symptoms. The treatment of choice is endovascular therapy, with high success rates and fewer complications.Case report: We present a 46-years-old female patient with headache 30 days before hospital presentation, with proptosis in the physical examination. MRI showed images compatible with CCF. Endovascular treatment was performed, showing a positive outcome.
Conclusion: The carotid cavernous fistula is a rare entity with sometimes insidious presentation; therefore, it is necessary a high level of suspicion to reach final diagnosis. From the neuroradiological point of view the importance of this entity is that this is a curable disease with endovascular or neurosurgical treatment.
