ABSTRACT
The diverticular disease
is a very common entity
in developed countries.
Symptomatic diverticulosis can
lead to serious complications
that require medical and
surgical interventions. With
the increasing number of
elderly and the advent of
new methods of diagnosis,
the prevalence of diverticular
disease has increased in recent
years. Diverticula can be found
throughout the colon but are
most common in the sigmoid, the
highest incidence of diverticula
on this site bowel, is attributed
to the fact that many vessels
are right on this intestinal
section and there is greater
intraluminal pressure. When
there diverticular bleeding
usually presents with painless
hematochezia. Diverticulitis
occurs with fever and crampy
abdominal pain, usually in
the left lower quadrant. There
may be diarrhea, constipation
and vomiting. If the right side
is affected, diverticulitis can
mimic the signs and symptoms
of acute appendicitis.
