ABSTRACT
Acute appendicits is a
major cause of acute abdomen
and a major surgical indication
in emergency department. It
is a very common condition
so its clinical manifestations
have been extensively
studied. Although it is very
common, there can be atypical
manifestations that cause delay
in surgical approach, resulting
in higher pre, intra and
postoperative complications.
Among the most common
special cases that require more
attention are pregnant patients,
patients with HIV/AIDS and
pediatric patients. This article
will mainly address the last
three issues, giving a primary
focus on their differences at
diagnosis. In conclusion, one
must perform a thorough
physical exam and consider the
respective laboratory abnorma
lities that are usually present in
these patients; this combined
with an assessment of imaging
in doubt for prompt surgical
diagnostic resolution.
