ABSTRACT
Laparoscopic appendectomy
has been widely practiced for
treatment of acute appendicitis
in the general population and
is considered gold standard in
most studies. With increasing
surgeon experience and
appropriate equipment, the
initial relative contraindication
of laparoscopy in pregnancy was
reevaluated. (#6) However, the
utility of laparoscopic surgery
for women with nongynecologic
conditions during pregnancy
is still in debate. (#1)
Pregnancy was considered
an absolute contraindication
for laparoscopic procedure
because of the adverse effect
of pneumoperitoneum over the
fetus, higher risk of fetal loss and
reduced visualization because
of the gravid uterus. (#1,#3,#7)
Recent studies and clinical
data suggest that laparoscopic
appendectomy is safe and useful
during pregnancy. (#3,#5,#12)
