ABSTRACT
Pregnancy in a sickle cell anemia patient is considered as a high risk situation because of the elevated morbidity and mortality incidence rate. An 18 year-old pregnant patient, black color skin, a history of sickle cell anemia and 36.4 pregnancy weeks is presented. She has to visit the emergency room presenting low abdominal pain and 39 °C of body temperature being transferred to the Intensive Care Unit where she is evaluated like a critical ill maternal patient by both urinary tract infection and nosocomial-associated pneumonia complicated with acute thoracic syndrome and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Conclusions: acute thoracic syndrome is a severe complication in this kind of anemia. The early diagnosis and treatment with broad spectrum antibiotics, anticoagulation therapy and plasma transfusion refill conduced to a satisfactory prognosis in this patient.REFERENCES
