ABSTRACT
Introduction: sleep is an essential condition for survival and its main function is
bodily and mental recovery.
Objective: to know and assess sleep pattern in nursing student from a public state
university.
Methods: descriptive, cross-sectional study carried out by quantitative approach and
with 42 students. For data collection, we used two questionnaires: Pittsburg Sleep
Quality Index (PSQI) and Epwoth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), both translated and
validated for the Portuguese language.
Results: PSQI test showed that 100% of the students had poor sleep quality and little
restful sleep. ESS showed that 85.7% presented excessive daytime sleepiness and,
among them, 26.2% obtained scores higher that 16, which meant severe daytime
sleepiness.
Conclusions: the students' sleep currently compromises quality, because they showed
excessive daytime sleepiness, which may be related with several teaching and
outreach activities.
