Nerve injuries in cosmetic surgery: incidence, prevention and treatment

ABSTRACT

Cosmetic procedures have been increasingly accepted in the past few years with a significant rise in the number of cosmetic surgeries done worldwide. Cosmetic surgery encompasses a wide range of surgical procedures in various parts of the body, such as face, neck, breasts, abdomen, upper and lower limbs. Although uncommon, temporary or permanent nerve injury from these surgeries may have functional and psychological consequences for the patients. Therefore, prompt recognition and appropriate treatment are necessary to avoid long-term sequelae. Depending on the type of nerve injury, treatment can range from conservative methods with close follow-up or surgery for repair. Prevention is of the upmost importance to prevent nerve injury during aesthetic surgeries. This article reviews the nerves at risk during specific cosmetic procedures, diagnosis and treatment of nerve injuries and how to prevent them.
