ABSTRACT
The compartment syndrome
(CS) consists in an elevation of the
intracompartmental preassure
that impairs tissue perfusion.
The intracompartmental
preassure is elevated by
conditions that either produce
external compression on the
compartment or increase
compartment volume, being
trauma the most common
cause and the inferior leg
compartment the most frequent
site. The diagnosis is commonly
made on the basis of the
clinical history, examination
findings and measurements
of compartment preassures,
althought this is not required.
Early diagnosis and fasciotomy
are known to be the best
determinants of good outcomes.
