ABSTRACT
Introduction: aggression to tissues because of prostheses and their fractures, constitute frequent emergencies. Objective: to determine the situation of emergencies in the dental prostheses service.
Methods: an observational, descriptive and transversal study was performed at “Andrés Ortíz Junco¨ Teaching Dental Clinic in Güines, from January to December 2012. The studied population was integrated by 2163 patients who went there because of an emergency. An interview, oral and prostheses examination were performed. The information was collected in forms. χ2 and Duncan multiple comparison were applied.
Results: urgencies in prostheses were presented with high frequency constituting the 68% of the total of patients. The highest percentage corresponded to the female sex with a 65,09% and to the 60 and older age group with the 35,95%. Urgencies because of falls, damage or deterioration of prostheses prevailed for a 93,90% and among them, the fall or addition of teeth, either in total or partial prostheses for a 49,06% and 56,81% respectively. The ¾ parts of the patients presented a certain type of lesion in the oral mucosa, having sub-prostheses stomatitis with the highest results for a 42%.
Conclusions: urgencies were presented with high frequency, prevailing the female sex and the 60 and older age group, as well as the urgencies by deterioration of prostheses with fell teeth and fractured bases, and the lesions of the oral mucosa, in the urgencies for aggression to the para- prosthetic organ.
