Risk factors, family working and non-intentional lesions in children younger than five years old

ABSTRACT
Introduction: non-intentional lesions or accidents are important causes of morbidity and mortality in children. Familiar functioning is an aspect that should be considered in the possible relation with them.Objective: to identify non-intentional lesions in families with children younger than five years old in the last six months, their risk factors and family working.
Methods: a transversal, retrospective and descriptive study was performed in 164 in homes with children younger than five years old in four doctors’ offices from “Luis Augusto Turcios Lima" Teaching Policlinic in San José de las Lajas. A visit for observation was carried out and the evaluation test of Family Functioning was used (FF-SIL) Age, risk factors of accidents, and accidents of children younger than five years old in the last six years were studied as well as family functioning.
Results: there were risks of accidents in all the families. The most important was the free access to the kitchen area, 72 % of the families were classified with low risk of accidents and 66 % were functional families, but an important relation among family functionality, number of risk factors and occurred accidents in the last six months was established. Accidents were presented in the 28,6 % of the of the houses. Falls were the most frequent ones.
Conclusions: an important relation was established among risk factors of accidents, the accidents, and family functioning level.
