ABSTRACT
Introduction: the scarce male attendance to the family planning (FP) service is one of the limitations recognized to this space. Increasing the participation of men is a goal included in many programs for family planning care, but the actions designed to achieve this sometimes do not respond to the needs of men and tend to meet the identified ones, primarily for women. Objective: to identify, from the perceptions of men attending the family planning service, their needs for care and how to meet them.
Method: the research was a descriptive cross-sectional study, conducted in the family planning service at Antonio Maceo Outpatient Polyclinic of El Cerro Municipality. Men attending this service during 2014 participated. Two techniques for obtaining information were used: questionnaire and group of discussion.
Results: the insufficient self-identification of the men with the studied service provokes their poor attendance to the office. This situation can be explained from the representations that are seen in the Cuban society on the men's sexuality and the issues related to their sexual and reproductive health. Such representations are partially reinforced in the service itself.
Conclusions: in the studied family planning consultation, needs for care are not met by the perceptions of male users and everything is just about giving a solution to the ones and only indentified from the governing program: information and sexual education for men.
