ABSTRACT
Introduction: urogenital mycoplasmas (Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum), despite being part of the normal flora of the vagina, are among the bacterial species most frequently involved in infertility of the couple. Objectives: to determine the incidence of urogenital mycoplasma in endocervix smear tests of patients in the Provincial Consultation Service for Infertile Couples, to classify the severity of the infection detected, and to identify sensitivity-resistance to different antimicrobials of the isolated genital mycoplasmas.
Methods: across-sectional, observational, descriptive study of female infertility by genital mycoplasmas was conducted in "Dr. Julio Rafael Alfonso Medina" Provincial Gynaecobstetric Teaching Hospital of Matanzas, between the months of November 2014 and January 2015. The sample consisted of the 117 patients who met the inclusion criteria.
Results: 56.4% of the samples tested were positive; the most common species was Ureaplasma urealyticum. Mild infections predominated in 59.09%. The most reported symptom was vaginal discharge (42.73%). Ureaplasma urealyticum showed greater resistance to ofloxacin (82%). No resistance was found of Mycoplasma hominis against the antimicrobial drugs used in the investigation. Coinfections were more resistant to azithromycin (100%), ofloxacin (90%) and erythromycin (80%).
Conclusions: the most common organism was Ureaplasma urealyticum. Mild infections predominated. Ureaplasma urealyticum showed to be more resistant than Mycoplasma hominis. Both were highly sensitive to pefloxacin and minocycline.
