ABSTRACT
Introduction: the study of anthropometric variables in the newborn is useful to standardize the growth parameters, detecting deviations from the normality and assessing their development, is a priority in primary health care. Objective: to describe the craniofacial anthropometric values in apparently healthy infants during their first six-months after birth.
Material and Method: an observational, prospective and longitudinal study of anthropometric measures for 124 infants at birth, at a month and at 6 months (59 infants studied at this time) was carried out. Variables using the mean and standard deviation were summarized. Means were compared using the T-Student test, analysis of variance [ANOVA] and Friedman test at 95% certainty.
Results: at birth the unique differences were observed between the cranial diameters. No significant differences were found at month old. At 6 months weight increase was only observed in females with respect male sex, but this was not significant.
Conclusion: the mean values of the basic anthropometric and craniofacial variables were within those established for the first semester of life, except cephalic circumference that was below at 6 months old. At 6 months, biparietal diameter was greater for boys, and the anteroposterior in girls. The basic anthropometric variables are somewhat higher in males, although at 6 months old females reached higher weight values.
